This guide covers how Stripe Tax calculations are handled for Cash Sale and Cash Refund transactions within the PayPack SuiteApp. It is designed to help you understand how tax liabilities are calculated, reported, and reversed in Stripe so that they stay consistent with your final settled amounts across your sales and refund workflows.
Introduction
PayPack extends Stripe Tax support to Cash Sale and Cash Refund records in NetSuite, in addition to standard Sales Orders and Invoices. This ensures that cash-based transactions are calculated and reported with the same accuracy as your invoiced revenue, and that any refunds issued against a Cash Sale correctly reverse the tax already reported to Stripe.
This guide assumes you are using the PayPack NetSuite SuiteApp and that Stripe Tax is already enabled and configured in your Stripe Dashboard.
How It Works
Cash Sales
When you create a Cash Sale, PayPack follows the same two-step “calculation, then transaction” pattern used elsewhere in the PayPack Stripe Tax integration.
- Preview: Click the “Preview Tax” button before finalizing the record to trigger a real-time tax calculation from Stripe and verify the amount before you save.
- Trigger: A Stripe Tax Transaction is created upon saving the Cash Sale record, committing the tax as “collected” in your Stripe Tax reports.
Cash Refunds (Reversals)
Cash Refunds automatically reverse the tax reported to Stripe for the original sale, preventing overpayment of collected taxes.
- Trigger: A Stripe Tax Reversal is created automatically when a Cash Refund is issued against a Cash Sale that has an existing Stripe Tax transaction in NetSuite.
- Tax Transaction Matching: PayPack identifies the original Stripe Tax Transaction ID associated with the initial sale to ensure the reversal is applied to the correct record.
Supported Scenarios
| Scenario | Description |
|---|---|
| Cash Sale (Standalone) | Tax calculation supported. A Stripe Tax Transaction is created upon saving the standalone Cash Sale. |
| Cash Sale (From Sales Order) | Tax calculation is not supported, since the calculation is done on the related Sales Order. A tax transaction is still created upon saving the Cash Sale. |
| Cash Refund (Full) | The complete tax amount for all items in the original transaction is reversed. |
| Cash Refund (Partial) | Tax is recalculated and reversed for specific line items only. |
Key Considerations
- Calculation Reliance: Cash Refunds do not trigger a new tax “preview”; they reuse the tax data logged at the line level from the original billing transaction.
- Flat Amount Parameter: For partial refunds, PayPack specifies the exact tax amount being reversed rather than recalculating it from scratch.
- Tax Overrides: If any tax amount overrides were used during the initial sale, these are accounted for during the reversal to maintain consistency.
Current Limitations
- Multi-line Shipping: Multi-line shipping is not supported for Cash Sales or Cash Refunds.
